what are the punishments for Zina (adultery/fornication) in Islam?
In the pervious part BOY FRIEND & GIRL FRIEND (Part III) we covered about “touching two non maharams is not allowed in Islam”. InshaALLAAH, in this article we shall cover the punishment for zina (adultery/fornication) in this life and next.
(1) Zina is the hinious and detestable act which destroy the martial relationship and degrades the status of being human and finally leads to punishment of ALLAAH, Azza wa Jal.
(a) Punishment for adultery in this life is Stone to death
Umar bin al-Khattab (RAA) narrated that he addressed the people and said, ‘Verily Allah has sent Muhammad with the Truth and sent down the Book to him, and the verse of stoning was included in what Allah sent down. We recited, memorized and comprehended it. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) accordingly (to what was in the verse) stoned to death (whoever committed adultery while being married), and we stoned after his death. But I am afraid that after a long time passes, someone may say, ‘We do not find the Verses of stoning in Allah’s Book, and thus they may go astray by abandoning an obligation that Allah has sent down. Verily, stoning is an obligation in the Book of Allah to be inflicted on married men and women who commit adultery, when their crime is proven, evident by pregnancy, or through the confession (of the adulterer).’ Agreed upon.
Bulug Al Maram: Book 10, Hadith 1248
(b) Punishment for fornication in this life is flogging 100 strips and banishment of one year from his town/city
Surah An-Noor(24), Verse 2:
(As for) the fornicatress and the fornicator, flog each of them, (giving) a hundred stripes,…
(English – Shakir).
Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) judged that the unmarried person who was guilty of illegal sexual intercourse be exiled for one year and receive the legal punishment (i.e., be flogged with one-hundred stripes) .
Sahih al-Bukhari 6833
(2) Punishment for zina in grave is to burn in pit like oven until Day of resurrection
Narrated Samura bin Jundub:
Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) very often used to ask his companions, “Did anyone of you see a dream?” So dreams would be narrated to him by those whom Allah wished to tell. One morning the Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Last night two persons came to me (in a dream) and woke me up and said to me, ‘……….’ So we proceeded and came across something like a Tannur (a kind of baking oven, a pit usually clay-lined for baking bread).” I think the Prophet (ﷺ) said, “In that oven there was much noise and voices.” The Prophet (ﷺ) added, “We looked into it and found naked men and women, and behold, a flame of fire was reaching to them from underneath, and when it reached them, they cried loudly. I asked them, ‘Who are these?’ ……… And those naked men and women whom you saw in a construction resembling an oven, they are the adulterers and the adulteresses……….’”
Sahih al-Bukhari 7047
(3) Punishment for zina in Hereafter is Hell-Fire with double Punishment
Surah Al-Furqan(25), Verse 68-69
(68)And those who invoke not any other ilah (god) along with Allah, nor kill such life as Allah has forbidden, except for just cause, nor commit illegal sexual intercourse and whoever does this shall receive the punishment.
(69)The torment will be doubled to him on the Day of Resurrection, and he will abide therein in disgrace;
(English – Mohsin Khan)

Surah Al-Isra(17), Verse 32:
And come not near to the unlawful sexual intercourse. Verily, it is a Fahishah [i.e. anything that transgresses its limits (a great sin)], and an evil way (that leads one to Hell unless Allah forgives him).
